How to Prioritize Your Health When Life Gets Busy

When life gets busy, taking care of yourself can easily move to the bottom of your list. Work, family, school, errands, and everything else can make it feel like there just isn’t enough time for YOU. But taking care of yourself doesn’t have to mean spending hours at the gym. Here are a few simple ways to make your health and fitness a priority, even when life gets busy.

1. Build Your Workouts Into Your Schedule

Find a time that works for you and put your workout on your calendar. If you block off time specifically for the gym, you’re more likely to treat it like any other commitment instead of something you can skip when your day gets busy. Whether that’s before work, during your lunch break, or after work, find a time that fits into your routine and stick with it.

2. Stop Thinking Your Workouts Have to Be Long

You don’t need to workout for 1-2 hours for it to count. Moving your body for 30 minutes is better than doing nothing at all. If you’re short on time, find ways to fit movement into the time you do have. Grab a quick workout during your lunch break, take a class, or stop at the gym for a little bit while you’re already out running errands. A shorter workout is still a workout.

3. Do the Workouts You Actually Enjoy

If you constantly push your workouts to the bottom of your list, it might be worth asking yourself if you actually enjoy what you’re doing. It’s much easier to skip something you don’t look forward to. Try a different class, switch up your routine, or try an exercise you’ve never done before. Finding something you enjoy can make staying active feel less like another chore, and you might meet some new people along the way.

4. Book Yourself Into Classes

Signing up for a class gives you a little extra accountability. Once you’re booked, you’ve made a commitment to show up, so make sure you follow through with it. Want to take it one step further? Tell your friends you’re going to class. Having someone else expecting you to be there can make it a lot harder to talk yourself out of going.

5. Work With a Personal Trainer

Sometimes having someone hold you accountable can make all the difference. A personal trainer can help you create a routine, give you direction, and give you someone who expects you to show up. You don’t necessarily have to work with a trainer several times a week, either. Even meeting once a week can give you some extra accountability and help you stay on track with your goals.

6. Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself Outside of the Gym

Your health isn’t just about exercise. Sleep, nutrition, hydration, and stress-management all play a role in how you feel. When you’re taking care of these areas of your life, you may find that you have more energy and motivation to build your workouts back into your routine, too.

Make Your Health Part of Your Routine

Life isn’t always going to slow down, and you don’t need to wait for things to become less busy before taking care of yourself. Find small, realistic ways to make movement and healthy habits part of the life you already have. You don’t have to do everything perfectly, you just have to keep making yourself a priority.
